The Catholic Church's detached sense of morality once again shows indifference to human suffering.
Calling their act an "abominable crime," Vatican official Cardinal Alfonso Lopez Trujillo said the Church plans to excommunicate a medical team for performing an abortion on an 11-year-old girl who was eight weeks pregnant after being raped by her stepfather, according to The Guardian.
This decision exposes how the Church's narrow-minded defense of a misguided sense of life causes far more harm than good. Doctors should be praised, not condemned, for their work to save a little girl from the life of economic hardship and social ostracization that awaited her should her tiny body have survived the birthing. The church is clearly indicating that the removal of an undeveloped fetus is a more portentous crime than the brutal sexual assault of an innocent child.
